Friday January 16 Housing and Economic stories

Free community college isn’t free; It’s a bad idea - (www.cnbc.com) President Obama seems bent on creating new problems for our country and economy under the guise of trying to solve a related problem. The latest installment is his proposal to give a two-year "Free Community College" education to any student with a "C" average or above, subsidized 75 percent by the federal government (i.e. taxpayers) and 25 percent by state governments (i.e. taxpayers). This is analogous to his approach to "solving" our healthcare issues. Instead of addressing rapidly rising costs, he has focused on increasing access which drives up costs. And this approach, once again, is insane.

No Such Thing as Free: "Free Community College" is just as "free" as everything else that is deemed "free" — it isn't. Someone has to pay for the costs of the program and those paying for it will be the taxpayers. That means that both the people who opt for free community college will pay for it — as well taxpayers at large — at inflated prices down the road. The federal government has already created a debt load that saddles future generations with more debt than the country's GDP. This type of "free" will cost dearly later.

Obama Community College Tuition Plan to Cost $60 Billion - (www.bloomberg.com)  President Barack Obama is proposing to provide a free community college education as an entitlement to millions of students at a cost of $60 billion over 10 years. Obama unveiled the plan today at a community college in Tennessee, a state that provides free tuition for community and technical colleges for high school graduates and served as the inspiration for the administration. The plan, which requires approval from the Republican-controlled U.S. Congress, would provide about three-quarters of the average cost of community college tuition, with states kicking in the rest, according to a White House fact sheet. “For millions of Americans, community colleges are essential pathways to the middle class,” Obama said at Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville. “I want to make it free.”

Obamacare ruling could take insurance from millions - (www.cnbc.com) A looming Supreme Court case threatens to lead to millions of people leaving individual market health insurance plans—and to very steep price hikes for people remaining in those plans, two new analyses find. The studies released Thursday by the Rand Corp. and the Urban Institute suggest that two-thirds of the U.S. individual insurance markets—which sell health coverage to people who don't get insurance through their employers—could be crippled, if not wrecked by a court decision that goes against the Obama administration. Rand's study found that a total of more than 9.6 million people would leave the individual health insurance rolls in 34 states served by HealthCare.gov, the federal Obamacare exchange, if the Supreme Court rules subsidies issued through that marketplace are illegal under the Affordable Care Act. Without such subsidies, many people would find their monthly premiums unaffordable.

There's An Awful Side To The Jobs Report  - (www.businessinsider.com) The economy is sick. We just got what was ostensibly a great jobs report: The economy added 252,000 jobs, and unemployment fell to 5.6%. We're moving toward normal. Wages are not growing. In fact, average hourly earnings were down 5 cents in December, to $24.57. That's down 0.2% from November. Economic theory would have it that as the economy grows and the labor market gets tighter, increasing competition among employers would require them to raise the pay of their employees to recruit new ones and keep the old ones. That's just not happening. Wages fell by 0.2% in December. It's hard to ascribe too much importance to one month's data point, but the fact is that wages have been more or less flat since they stopped falling after the recession. Let's look at that chart from Nick Bunker again:

The Benefits of Fewer NYPD Arrests - The Atlantic - (www.theatlantic.com) New York cops started a "virtual work stoppage" to protest Mayor Bill de Blasio. That might be a good thing for New Yorkers. A funny thing happened in New York City last week: Cops stopped arresting people. Not altogether, of course—that would be anarchy. But since last Monday, the number of arrests in America's largest city plummeted by two-thirds compared to the previous year. The decline is a conscious slowdown by New York's police force to protest City Hall's perceived lack of support for law enforcement. NYPD officers and union leaders have been at odds with Mayor Bill de Blasio in the wake of the Eric Garner case and the killings of Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos this month. In their latest move, officers have begun a "virtual work stoppage" throughout the city by making fewer low-level arrests and issuing fewer citations. The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, New York's largest police union, urged its members not to make arrests "unless absolutely necessary," according to the New York Post's report. [The slowdown] has helped contribute to a nose dive in low-level policing, with overall arrests down 66 percent for the week starting Dec. 22 compared with the same period in 2013, stats show. Citations for traffic violations fell by 94 percent, from 10,069 to 587, during that time frame. Summonses for low-level offenses like public drinking and urination also plunged 94 percent—from 4,831 to 300. Even parking violations are way down, dropping by 92 percent, from 14,699 to 1,241. Drug arrests by cops assigned to the NYPD’s Organized Crime Control Bureau—which are part of the overall number—dropped by 84 percent, from 382 to 63.

All Over America, Government Officials Are Cracking Down On Preppers - (www.zerohedge.com) Why would the government want to punish people that are just trying to work hard, become more self-sufficient and take care of their families?  There are approximately 3 million preppers in the United States today, and often they appear to be singled out for punishment by bureaucratic control freaks that are horrified at the thought that there are families out there that actually want to try to become less dependent on the system.  So if you use alternative methods to heat your home, or if you are not connected to the utility grid, or if you collect rainwater on your property, or if you believe that parents should have the ultimate say when it comes to health decisions for their children, you could become a target for overzealous government enforcers.
Once upon a time, America was the land of the free and the home of the brave, but now we are being transformed into a socialist police state where control freak bureaucrats use millions of laws, rules and regulations to crack down on anyone that dares to think for themselves. For example, people have been burning wood to heat their homes since this country began.  And this is still very common in rural areas.  But the Obama administration does not like this at all.  The Obama bureaucrats at the EPA fear that our little wood stoves may be contributing to “global warming”, so they have outlawed the production and sale of 80 percent of the wood stoves that are currently in use.  The following comes from a recent Forbes article
